Genesis 37

Day 1

We ended Genesis 36, and now we are starting Genesis 37! In preparation for the lessons to come, let’s read all of Genesis 37 to your Tiny Arrows!

Day 2

Jacob, Abraham’s grandson, was living in Canaan! The place that God promised Abraham would be for his descendants! Today let’s read Genesis 37:1 and Genesis 12:7 and look at a map and find Israel! Then show your children on the map where your parents were born and if they moved from that place where they are now! Then show them where you currently live, is it the same place or somewhere different!

Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan. – Genesis 37:1 NIV

The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” Genesis 12:7

Day 3

Jacob had 12 sons and 4 wives! His sons helped out by taking care of the flocks! One day Joesph, Dan, Naphtali, Gad and Asher were taking care of the flocks together and when they went back home, Joesph told their father Jacob that his other brothers were being bad. Today let’s read Genesis 37:2 and color the coloring page.

This is the account of Jacob’s family line. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them. – Genesis 37:2 NIV

Day 4

Joseph was Jacob’s favorite son! He loved him so much he gave him a robe with beautiful colors! Today let’s read Genesis 37:3 and design and color Joseph’s robe!

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. – Genesis 37:3 NIV

Day 5

Joseph’s brothers saw that their father liked him best and they were not happy about it. They hated him and only said mean things to him! Today let’s read Genesis 37:4 and James 3:10. Then play a game with your Tiny Arrow where the repeat what you say. Tell them every time you say “Blessing” for them to say “Blessing” back. But every time you say “Curses” have them remain silent. Explain that only blessings should come from our mouth and not curses!

When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. – Genesis 37:4 NIV

Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be! James 3:10

Day 6

We learned that Joseph was Jacob’s favorite son, and one day he had a dream! It was so special he told it to his brothers! Today let’s read Genesis 37:5 and ask your Tiny Arrow to share one of their dreams with you!

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him. – Genesis 37:5 NIV

Day 7

Joesph told his brothers his dream! In his dream they were working out in the fields, putting the sheaves of grain into piles and binding them together. Then Joseph’s sheave stood up and the others ones bowed down to it! Today let’s read Genesis 37:6-7 and play a game! Have your Tiny Arrow and you lay on the ground pretending to be sheaves of grain. Stand up tall, then have your Tiny Arrow stand up and bow down to you. Just like the dream!

He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.” – Genesis 37:6-7 NIV

Day 8

After Joseph’s brothers heard the dream they thought they knew exactly what it meant! They thought it meant that Joesph would rule over his brothers! That made them mad! Today let’s read Genesis 37:8, Genesis 41:15-16 and pray. Let’s ask God to help us interpret our dreams when we get them! That way we will not assume what a dream means, but we will ask God about it first! Just like Joseph did in Genesis 41:15-16!

His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said. – Genesis 37:8 NIV

Pharoah said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.” – Genesis 41:15-16 NIV

Day 9

Joseph had one dream that he shared with his brothers. Then he had another dream that he shared with them too! In the first dream the grain was bowing down to him and in the second dream the sun, moon and eleven stars were bowing down to him! Today let’s read Genesis 37:9 and play the same game where your Tiny Arrow pretends to be the sun, moon and stars and you pretend to be Joseph. Stand tall, then have your Tiny Arrow make the shape of a circle with their body and bow down, the shape of a moon and bow down, then the shape of a star and bow down to you!

Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” – Genesis 37:9 NIV

Day 10

After Joseph told his brothers his dream, he told his dad too! His brothers were jealous, and after Jacob thought that it meant he, his wife and his sons would bow down to Joseph he rebuked him. Then he decided to think about it. Today let’s read Genesis 37:10-11 then reread verse 9. First we are going to pray to God and ask Him for His interpretation, then we are going to read verse 9 over and over and see if we can think of different things the dream may of meant! Jacob had an interpretation then continued to think about it. Just like we can think about the verse and see if we can think about something different about it!

When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind. – Genesis 37:10-11 NIV

Day 11

We learned that Joseph had two dreams that he shared with his family! Then his brothers left to go let their father’s flocks graze near Shechem! Jacob told Joseph to go see his brothers who were grazing the flocks! Today let’s read Genesis 37:12-13 and send your Tiny Arrow out in an errand to go and see or check on something, for example they may go and check if you have any more of their favorite snacks. Then tell them Joseph’s father Jacob was going to send Joseph to go and check something too!

Now his brothers had gone to graze their fathers flock near Shechem, and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.” – Genesis 37:12-13 NIV

Day 12

Joseph was sent to see if his brothers were doing ok. He left Hebron and went to Shechem! Today let’s read Genesis 37:14 and draw a line from Hebron to Shechem!

So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. – Genesis 37:14 NIV

Day 13

Joseph made it to Shechem, but he could not find his brothers! So as he was looking around a man found him and asked him what he was looking for! Today let’s read Genesis 37:14-15 show your Tiny Arrow a large object. Then tell them you are going to place it in another room. Hide it in a different room, then have them go find it in the first room. When they are looking for it, ask them what they are looking for. Tell them Joesph was looking for something and could not find it, and someone asked him what he was looking for!

When Joseph arrived in Shechem, a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?” – Genesis 37:14-15 NIV

Day 14

Joseph told the man who found him that he was looking for his brothers. Then he asked him if he knew where they were! Today let’s read Genesis 37:16 and help Joseph find the sheep!

He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?” – Genesis 37:16 NIV

Day 15

The man told Josephthat his brothers were not in Shechem, but Dothan! It helped when Joseph stopped and asked for directions! Today let’s read Genesis 37:17 and tell your Tiny Arrow to go and get something for you. Then tell them if they do not know where it is, to ask your for directions so they can find it quickly!

“They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.” – Genesis 37:17 NIV

Day 16

Joseph was told by a man in Shechem to go to Dothan to find his brothers, and he did! Today let’s read Genesis 37:17 and grab the same large object that your Tiny Arrow was looking for a few lessons ago, and this time tell them the room it is in, and have them go and find it!

So Joesph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. – Genesis 37:17b NIV

Day 17

Joesph found his brothers! But before he reached them, they saw him too and they wanted to kill him! Oh no! Today let’s read Genesis 37:18 and see how well your Tiny Arrow can see! Grab three small toys and walk a few steps away from them, then hold up the first toy and have them name what it is. After they guess it correctly, walk back further and do the same thing. Then do it one more time, walking further back and see if your Tiny Arrow can name what you’re holding. Then explain that Jospeh’s brothers saw him when he was still far away.

But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. – Genesis 37:18 NIV

Day 18

Joseph’s brothers saw him and wanted to kill him! They were still upset about his dreams! Today let’s read Genesis 37:19-20 and ask God to help you forgive everyone that makes you upset!

“Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of the cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” – Genesis 37:19-20 NIV

Day 19

Joseph’s oldest brother Reuben did not want to hurt Joseph! He told his brothers to throw him in the well but not hurt him, then later Reuben was planning on rescuing Joseph! Today let’s read Genesis 37:21-22 and using chalk or string make a circle on a solid surface. Then have your Tiny Arrow jump into the circle and you lift them out of it! Just like Reuben wanted to lift Joseph out of the well!

When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father. – Genesis 37:21-22 NIV

Day 20

When Joseph reached his brothers, they did not say hello and give him hugs, they took off his ornate robe and threw him into the well! Lucky for Joseph the well was empty of water, but there could have been snakes and scorpions! Oh no! Today let’s read Genesis 37:23-24 and color the coloring page!

So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing—and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it. – Genesis 37:23-24 NIV

Day 21

We learned that Joseph’s brothers threw him into an empty well! Oh no! Then, while his brothers were eating they saw a lot of Ishmaelite’s coming by with their camels loaded with spices, balm and myrrh! Today let’s read Genesis 37:25 and color the coloring page!

As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt. – Genesis 37:25 NIV

Day 22

Joseph’s brothers wanted to kill him, and Reuben wanted to bring him back to his father, but when they saw the Ishmaelites Judah decided to try and sell him instead of killing him! Today let’s read Genesis 37:26-27 and grab some change and a stuffed animal. Pretend that you are one of Joseph’s brothers and your Tiny Arrow is one of the Ishmaelites. Then ask your Tiny Arrow if they want to buy the stuffed animal, and have your Tiny Arrow give you the change! Explain that they bought the animal and now it belongs to them!

Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?” Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed. – Genesis 37:26-27 NIV

Day 23

Joseph’s brothers decided to sell him to the Ishmaelites and the Ishmaelites agreed! They bought him for 20 skekels of silver! Then they took Joseph with them to Egypt! Today let’s read Genesis 37:28 and grab 20 silver coins! Have your Tiny Arrow help you count the coins one by one and tell them that Joseph was sold for 20 shekels of silver!

So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt. – Genesis 37:28 NIV

Day 24

Joseph was now on his way to Egypt and when Reuben came back to his brothers he was upset because Joseph was not there! He had wanted to bring him back home and now he couldn’t! Today let’s read Genesis 37:29 and grab the same stuffed animal from the previous lesson. Place it in a certain spot, then have your Tiny Arrow leave the room while you hid it out of sight. Call them back in and show them that the animal is missing. It wasn’t in the same spot, just like Joseph wasn’t in the same place when Reuben came back!

When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes .- Genesis 37:29 NIV

Day 25

Joseph was now on his way to Egypt and Reuben had discovered he was missing! Reuben was upset and didn’t know what to do! Today let’s read Genesis 37:30 and ask your Tiny Arrow what they would do! Maybe would they go home without Joseph or maybe would they go after Joseph?

He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?” – Genesis 37:30 NIV

Day 26

Reuben and his brothers decided to not tell their father the truth about Joseph, but to lie. They took Joseph’s coat and put blood on it to make it look like he had been in an accident. Today let’s read Genesis 37:31 and grab an old light colored cloth, towel or paper towel and some dark juice. Have your Tiny Arrow dip the cloth in the juice and see if the color of the cloth changes!

Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in blood. – Genesis 37:31 NIV

Day 27

Joseph’s brothers took the robe that had goat’s blood on it and brought it back to their father. They asked him if he recognized it, because Jacob had given Joseph the coat! Today let’s read Genesis 37:32 and grab one of your Tiny Arrows shirts or coats. Then ask them who is belongs to! Just like Joseph’s brothers were asking their father if he knew who it belonged to!

They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.” – Genesis 37:32 NIV

Day 28

Jacob knew it was Joseph’s robe! He thought an animal had eaten him! Today let’s read Genesis 37:33 and play tag! Have one person pretend to be the animal and the other one be Joseph! When they are caught, reverse the roles and play again!

He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph had surely been torn to pieces.” – Genesis 37:33 NIV

Day 29

Jacob was so sad! He thought Joseph was dead! He put on sackcloth and mourned for many days. Sackcloth was rough and not a comfortable material to wear! Today let’s read Genesis 37:34 and find a rougher fabric that your Tiny Arrow can feel that can represent sackcloth!

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days. – Genesis 37:34 NIV

Day 30

Jacob was till sad about Joseph. Meanwhile Joseph was sold to a man in Egypt named Popiphar! He was one of Pharoh’s officials! Today let’s read Genesis 37:35-36 and color the coloring page!

All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him. Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Popiphar, one of Pharoh’s officials, the captain of the guard. – Genesis 37:35-36 NIV

Day 31

Today let’s reread Genesis 37 and remember the activities and verses we learned!
