Genesis 40

Day 1

We ended Genesis 39, and now we are starting Genesis 40! In preparation for the lessons to come, let’s read all of Genesis 40 to your Tiny Arrows!

Day 2

Joseph was in prison, but he found favor with the prison warden! After Joseph had been in prison for a while the cupbearer and baker for the king of Egypt offended the king of Egypt! The cupbearer gave the king his drink and the baker made him food! Today let’s read Genesis 40:1 and let your Tiny Arrow try to be a cupbearer or a baker! They can practice pouring and serving you a drink of water or, with your help, they can bake something!

Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt. – Genesis 40:1 NIV

Day 3

The cupbearer and the baker offended the king of Egypt and the king was mad! He was so mad that he put them in prison! Today let’s read Genesis 40:2-3 and grab some pillows and two stuffed animals. One to represent the cupbearer and one to represent the baker. Then have your Tiny Arrow pretend to be Joseph in prison (surrounded by pillows) and then place the two stuffed animals in there with them. Explain that the king of Egypt was mad at them, and now they have to go to prison!

Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined. – Genesis 40:2-3 NIV

Day 4

Jospeh got to help and talk to the cupbearer and baker! Today let’s read Genesis 40:4 and set up the same “prison” as yesterday with the same stuffed animals. Tell your Tiny Arrow that he is to help the cupbearer and baker! Then encourage your Tiny Arrow to play along and get them something to eat or drink!

The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended to them. – Genesis 40:4 NIV

Day 5

Joseph was still in prison and now he was helping out the cupbearer and the baker! One night they both had a dream, but it was a different dream with a different meaning! Today let’s read Genesis 40:4-5 and make up two different scenarios for a dream and explain to your Tiny Arrow how the dream is different, so what it means must be different too! For example, one person may have a dream about cats and the other person about going swimming, they both had dreams, but they were both different!

After they had been in custody for some time, each of the two men—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison—had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own. – Genesis 40:4-5 NIV

Day 6

Joseph came to see the cupbearer and the baker in the morning and they were both sad! Today let’s read Genesis 40:6 and have your Tiny Arrow make a sad face!

When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected.Genesis 40:6 NIV

Day 7

Joseph went to visit the cupbearer and baker and they were both sad! Today let’s read Genesis 40:7 and make a face to your Tiny Arrow; sad, happy, surprised, etc, and have them ask you “Why you are so… today?” and name the emotion on your face!

So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?” – Genesis 40:7 NIV

Day 8

The cupbearer and the baker both had dreams! What made them sad is they had no one to tell them what the dreams meant! But Joseph knew that God knew what it meant and he knew God could help! Today let’s read Genesis 40:8 and have your Tiny Arrow tell you their dream or tell them one of your dreams, then pray that God tells you what it means!

“We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.” Then Jospeh said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.” – Genesis 40:8 NIV

Day 9

The chief cupbearer had a dream and he told Joseph what it meant! He had a dream about a vine and three branches! Then the branch grew grapes and he squeezed the grape juice into a cup and gave it to Pharaoh to drink! Today let’s read Genesis 40:9-11 and have your Tiny Arrow draw a vine and three branches in the first box, in the second box draw grapes, and in the third box draw a cup! Save this paper for the next lesson!

So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, “In my dream I saw a vine in front of me, and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes. Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup into his hand. – Genesis 40:9-11 NIV

Day 10

The cupbearer had a dream about branches, grapes and cups! With God’s help, Joseph was able to tell the cupbearer what it meant! It meant that in three days the cupbearer would go back to his old job! Today let’s read Genesis 40:12-13 and on the side of the first drawing of the three branches have your Tiny Arrow write “3 days”. Then next to the grapes write “bring drinks” and next to the cup write “serve Pharaoh.” Just what his dream meant!

“This is what it means,” Joseph said to him. “The three branches are three days. Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.” – Genesis 40:12-13 NIV

Day 11

The cupbearer told Joseph his dream and Joseph told him what it meant! He knew it would come true because God had helped him interpret it! He even told the cupbearer to remember him! Today let’s read Genesis 40:14-15 and help your Tiny Arrow try to remember a time that someone helped them!

“But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.” – Genesis 40:14-15 NIV

Day 12

After Joseph told the cupbearer what his dream meant, the baker told Jospeh his dream! He had a dream that there were three baskets of bread on his head. In the top basket were yummy baked treats but the birds were eating them! Today let’s read Genesis 40:16-17 and follow the same exercise with the previous coloring page! In the first box have your Tiny Arrow draw 3 baskets, in the second a smiling head, and in the third a bird!

When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread. In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.” – Genesis 40:16-17 NIV

Day 13

Joseph told the baker what his dream meant! In three days the baker would die and the birds would eat his flesh! Oh no! Today let’s read Genesis 40:18-19 and after the first box have your Tiny Arrow write “3 days”, second write “head” and for the third “birds eating”!

“This is what it means,” Joseph said. “The three baskets are three days. Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away at your flesh.” – Genesis 40:18-19 NIV

Day 14

Joseph told both the baker and the cupbearer their dreams and three days later it was Pharaoh’s birthday! Pharaoh had a feast for all his officials! He even had the cupbearer and baker get out of prison and come and see him! Today let’s read Genesis 40:20 and ask your Tiny Arrow if they could have anything to eat at their birthday party, what would they want! Then have them lift up your chin gently with their hands to represent Pharaoh lifting up the cupbearer and bakers heads!

Now the third day was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials. – Genesis 40:20 NIV

Day 15

It was Pharaoh’s birthday and he had the cupbearer and baker get out of prison! The cupbearer got to bring Pharaoh drinks again, but the baker died! Both things happened just like Joseph had said! Today let’s read Genesis 40:21-22 and reread Genesis 40:12-13 and Genesis 40:18-19! Everything Joseph said happened!

He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand—but he impaled the chief baker, just as Jospeh had said to them in his interpretation. – Genesis 40:21-22 NIV

“This is what it means,” Joseph said. “The three baskets are three days. Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away at your flesh.” – Genesis 40:18-19 NIV

Day 16

The chief cupbearer was back in the palace serving Pharaoh his drinks. Everything Joseph had told him had happened, but the cupbearer forgot about Joseph! He forgot to tell Pharaoh about him! Today let’s read Genesis 40:23 and have your Tiny Arrow thank those around them for everything they do to help them!

The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him. – Genesis 40:23 NIV

Day 17

Today let’s reread Genesis 40 and remember the activities and verses we learned!
