Genesis 17

Day 1

We ended Genesis 16, and now we are starting Genesis 17! In preparation for the lessons to come, let’s read all of Genesis 17 to your Tiny Arrows!

Day 2

When Abram reached Canaan he was 75 years old. He was 86 when Ishmael was born. Now Abram was 99. Today let’s read Genesis 17:1 and ask your Tiny Arrow if they can count to 99. Then tell them the oldest person they know and how old they are.

Bonus: Ask your Tiny Arrow what they can remember about Abram up until now. He left Ur, he went to Harran, he went to Egypt, he fought giant killers and rescued Lot, he made a covenant with God and he had Ishmael!

When Abram was ninety-nine years old – Genesis 17:1a NIV

Day 3

When Abram was 99 the Lord appeared to him again! He told Abram to walk before him faithfully and be blameless. Today let’s read the rest of Genesis 17:1 and grab a piece of paper and cut it into 4-8 equal sections. On half of the pieces write “faithfully”, and on the half write “blameless”. Then put the papers down in a line so many feet apart for your Tiny Arrow to run or walk to each one. When they reach one have them pick up the paper and read what it says. Emphasize that they have walked before the Lord “faithfully” or “blameless” up that that point but they need to continue to do so, until they reach the last piece paper. After they have reached the last paper, read them Genesis 17:2.

the Lord appeared to him and said, I am God almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.”Genesis 17:1b NIV

“Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.” – Genesis 17:2 NIV

Day 4

God told Abram to walk before him faithfully and be blameless and He would make a promise with Abram and give him children. God was telling Abram to be holy like He is holy! Abram reacted by falling facedown! Today let’s read Genesis 17:3 and do some burpees! Have your Tiny Arrow jump to their feet and hands (push-up position) and say, “The Lord is Holy!” Then jump up and do it again!

Abram fell facedown – Genesis 17:3a NIV

Day 5

God’s promise to Abram was that he would be a father. Now God told Abram that not only would he be a father, but a father of many nations! Today let’s read Genesis 17: then ask your Tiny Arrow if they can name a nation that Abram is a father of! Israel!

and God said to him, “As for me, this is my covenant with you: you will be the father of many nations. – Genesis 17:3b-4 NIV

Day 6

God not only made a promise to Abram, He changed his name! He changed his name from Abram and Abraham! Today let’s read Genesis 17:5 and either write down Abram or have your Tiny Arrow sound it out and spell it. Then write down Abraham or have your Tiny Arrow sound it out and spell it. Now ask them which letters God added to his name, H and A. Next have your Tiny Arrow sound the letters out and say “ha”!

No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations – Genesis 17:5 NIV

Day 7

God changed Abram’s name to Abraham! Then He told Abraham that he would be very fruitful! Today let’s read Genesis 17:6 then draw and color a tree with fruit on it! You can even use your handprint to make the tree!

I will make you very fruitful; – Genesis 17:6a NIV

Day 8

We learned that God would make Abram fruitful, then He told him kings would come from him! Today let’s read Genesis 17:6 and make a crown from the coloring page or make your own!

I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. – Genesis 17:6b NIV

Day 9

God was separating Abraham and his descendants from the rest of the world by making a promise to him and his family. He was telling them he would be their God! Today let’s read Genesis 17:7 then find Abraham in the picture. Out of everyone, God chose Abraham to make this promise too!

I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for generations to come. To be your God and the God of your descendants after you. – Genesis 17:7 NIV

Day 10

God said that He would be Abraham’s God, He also gave the land of Canaan to be their everlasting possession! Today let’s read Genesis 17:8 then tell your Tiny Arrow’s if there is something your parents or grandparents gave you that has been handed down through the generations. Just like Abraham’s children would get what Abraham received!

The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God. – Genesis 17:8 NIV

Day 11

God made a big promise to Abraham, and He did not want Abraham to forget it! He also did not want Abraham’s descendants to forget it either. Today let’s read Genesis 17:9 then make a journal. Grab a few pieces of paper and staple them together or grab a new notebook, and on the cover write “God’s promises”. Each time God gives you a promise, let’s write it down so you do not forget it!

Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.” – Genesis 17:9 NIV

Day 12

We learned that God made a promise to Abraham! God wanted Abraham and his descendants to always remember the promise he made, so he asked Abraham to circumcise every male. This would be a daily reminder, of God’s promise! Today let’s read Genesis 17:10-11 and think of ways you can remember God’s promises everyday!

“This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep. Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.” – Genesis 17:10-11 NIV

Day 13

The sign of the promise God made was for Abraham, his children and anyone who lived with him! God wanted everyone in Abraham’s house to remember! Today let’s read Genesis 17:12 then make a sign to hang in your house. Grab a piece of paper and write “remember God’s promises” or maybe a promise He has made to your family. Hang it somewhere that your whole family will see and be reminded of it every day!

For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring.”Genesis 17:12 NIV

Day 14

God wanted to not only include Abraham’s children, but his helpers! God’s promise was for others too! Today let’s read Genesis 17:13 then pray together! Ask God to show you how you can be helpful to others so their promises can be fulfilled!

Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.” – Genesis 17:13a NIV

Day 15

God wanted Abraham and his people to remember His promise and to be obedient. He did not want anyone to forget or choose not to live the way God asked them to live! He wanted everyone to be under one standard! Today let’s read Genesis 17:13-14 and make a flag! You can make it out of construction paper and a popsicle stick! Then write “God’s standard” on the flag and hang it or place it somewhere in the house for the children to easily see. Now have your Tiny Arrows race to find it and stand next to it!

My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant. Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.” – Genesis 17:13b-14 NIV

Day 16

God changed Abram’s name to Abraham and in Genesis 17:15 He changed Sarai’s name to Sarah! He changed the i to an h. Today let’s read Genesis 17:15, color Sarah’s coloring page, then write her original name Sarai, erase the “i” and add an “h”! We will use this coloring page for the next few days.

God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.” – Genesis 17:15 NIV

Day 17

After God changed Sarah’s name He said He would bless her and give her a son! Children are a blessing from God! Today let’s read Genesis 17:16 then draw a baby by Sarah on the coloring page we wrote on yesterday! Save this coloring page for the next lesson too!

“I will bless her and surely give you a son by her.” – Genesis 17:16 NIV

Day 18

God said that Sarah would be a mother of nations, and kings of people would come from her! Her name even means princess! Today let’s read Genesis 17:16 and draw a crown on Sarah from the previous lesson’s coloring page!

“I will bless her so that she will be a mother of nations, kings of peoples will come from her.” – Genesis 17:16 NIV

Day 19

When Abram heard God say Sarah would have a son he laughed! He was a hundred years old and Sarah was 90! Today let’s read Genesis 17:17 and do some research! Find out the oldest person you know who had a child or look online for the oldest person who had a baby!

Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” – Genesis 17:17 NIV

Day 20

We learned that God changed Sarai’s name to Sarah and that she would have a son! That son would be blessed, but Abraham wanted to make sure that his first son Ishmael would be blessed too! Today let’s read Genesis 17:18 and grab an umbrella. Open the umbrella and stand under it. Then say that standing under the umbrella represents living under God’s blessing. Abraham was under the blessing and he asked for Ishmael to be under it too! Then let your Tiny Arrow under the umbrella to represent Abraham wanting Ishmael to be under the blessing.

And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” – Genesis 17:18 NIV

Day 21

God told Abraham he and Sarah would have a son, and then he told him what to name him! Today let’s read Genesis 17:19 then remember what letters God added and changed to their names and what Abraham did after he found out Sarah was going to have a son. God added a “ha” to Abraham’s name and a “h” to Sarah’s name. That spells “Hah!” And then Abraham laughed when he learned he would have a son! Now have your Tiny Arrows guess what Isaac’s name means. Isaac’s name means laughter!

Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac.” – Genesis 17:19 NIV

Day 22

God told Abraham that the promise He made to him would go to his son Isaac. Today let’s read Genesis 17:19 and ask your Tiny Arrow if they remember any part of the covenant or the land he would inherit. Then read Genesis 17:3-8.

I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.” – Genesis 17:19 NIV

God said to him, “As for me, this is my covenant with you: you will be the father of many nations. No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for generations to come. To be your God and the God of your descendants after you. The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.” – Genesis 17:3-8 NIV

Day 23

God said he would bless Isaac but Abraham also asked him about Ishmael. Today let’s read Genesis 17:20 then praise the Lord with thankfulness that He answers our prayers!

And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him;” – Genesis 17:19 NIV

Day 24

We talked about God telling Abraham He would bless his son Ishmael too! Today let’s read Genesis 17:20 and draw fruit on Ishmael! Save this coloring page for the next lesson!

I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers.” – Genesis 17:20a NIV

Day 25

God told Abraham that Ishmael would have many descendants, then He told him he would be the father of 12 rulers! Today let’s read the rest of Genesis 17:20 then draw 12 people around the Ishmael coloring page from yesterday!

He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.” – Genesis 17:20b NIV

Day 26

Ishmael would be blessed, but Isaac would be blessed and have Abraham’s covenant! Today let’s read Genesis 17:21 then draw a line to who gets what on the coloring page!

But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.” – Genesis 17:21 NIV

Day 27

God finished telling Abraham all the amazing things that were going to happen in Abraham’s future and what God wanted him to do. Today let’s read Genesis 17:22 then ask your Tiny Arrow if they remember what God asked Abraham to do. Circumcise himself and all the males in his household!

When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him. – Genesis 17:22 NIV

Day 28

We learned about the blessings for Ishmael and Isaac and then Abraham was obedient to what God asked him to do! Today let’s read Genesis 17:23 then ask your child to do something simple. After you have explained it, ask them to do it right away explaining that Abraham was quick to obey, and we should be too!

On that very day Abraham took his own son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household and circumcised them, as God told him. – Genesis 17:23 NIV

Day 29

Abraham was 99 when he obeyed, and Ishmael was 13! It did not matter how old Abraham was, he obeyed God! Today let’s read Genesis 17:24-25 and talk to our Tiny Arrows about ways that we obey God too!

Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised, and his son Ishmael was thirteen. – Genesis 17:24-25 NIV

Day 30

Abraham and Ishmael obeyed on the same day! Today let’s read Genesis 17:26 then do an activity together that demonstrates being obedient the first time!

Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day. – Genesis 17:26 NIV

Day 31

Not only was Abraham and Ishmael obedient, so were all the men in Abraham’s household! We need to encourage others to be obedient too! Today let’s read Genesis 17:27 then pick a verse and encourage your child to be obedient to that verse and encourage him to encourage others to be obedient to it too!

And every male in Abraham’s household, including those born in his household or bought from an foreigner, was circumcised with him. – Genesis 17:27 NIV

Day 32

Today let’s reread Genesis 17 and remember the activities and verses we learned!
