Genesis 29

Day 1

Happy Monday Arrow Makers! Last week we ended Genesis 28, and now we are starting Genesis 29! In preparation for the lessons to come, let’s read all of Genesis 29 to your Tiny Arrows!

Day 2

Jacob was traveling to Harran in Paddan Aram to find a wife. He was traveling to the land of the eastern peoples! Today let’s read Genesis 29:1 and check out a map and help your Tiny Arrow find the people/states/country’s that are east of them!

Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples. – Genesis 29:1 NIV

Day 3

Jacob went to Paddan Aram and saw a well! It was where the shepherds went to get water for their sheep! There were three flocks waiting at the well to get water! Today let’s read Genesis 29:2 and color the coloring page and make and set up the cutouts of the characters/pieces (except the large stone) and act out Jacob arriving at a well with the shepherd and sheep waiting by it. We will be using this diagram for the next couple of weeks.

There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well. – Genesis 29:2 NIV

Day 4

Jacob found a well where the shepherds gave water to their sheep. The stone over the mouth of the well was big! Today let’s finish Genesis 29:2 and color then place the stone in front of the well!

The stone over the mouth of the well was large. – Genesis 29:2 NIV

Day 5

The stone over the well was large and heavy! The shepherds would work together to roll the stone away to give the sheep water to drink! When the sheep were done drinking they would roll it back. Today let’s read Genesis 29:3 and pretend to roll the rock away from the well, using the shepherd puppets, to expose the water. We will be using these puppets next week too!

When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone away from the well’s mouth and water the sheep. Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well. – Genesis 29:3 NIV

Day 6

Last week we learned that Jacob found a well where the shepherds and sheep were waiting. Jacob talked to the shepherd and asked them where they were from! Today let’s read Genesis 29:4 and using the puppets from last week act out what Jacob and the shepherd said! We will be using the puppets all this week!

Jacob asked the shepherds, “My brothers, where are you from?” “We’re from Harran,” they replied. – Genesis 29:4 NIV

Day 7

Jacob learned that the shepherds were from Harran, the place Jacob was going too. Then he asked them if they knew Laban, his uncle, and the person he was going to see, and they said yes! Today let’s read Genesis 29:5 and using the puppets again act out the next scene.

He said to them, “Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?” “Yes, we know him,” they answered. – Genesis 29:5 NIV

Day 8

The shepherds knew Jacob’s uncle Laban! So Jacob asked him how he was doing, and they said he was well! They even said Rachel his daughter was on her way to the well with her sheep! Today let’s read Genesis 29:6 and make the Rachel and sheep puppets and using the puppets act out the scene of having them traveling towards the well!

Then Jacob asked him, “Is he well?” “Yes, he is,” they said, “and here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep.” – Genesis 29:6 NIV

Day 9

Jacob saw Rachel coming and told the shepherds to water the sheep and let them go back to the pasture. Today let’s read Genesis 29:7 and act out the scene using the puppets!

“Look,” he said, “the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.” – Genesis 29:7 NIV

Day 10

The shepherds told Jacob they couldn’t water the sheep until all the flocks came and the stone was moved away. The shepherds needed to work together to move the stone since it was so heavy! Today let’s read Genesis 29:8 and act out the scene. We will be using these puppets next week too. Then find something for you and your Tiny Arrow to move from one place to another by working together!

“We can’t,” they replied, “until all the flocks are gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep.” – Genesis 29:8 NIV

Day 11

Last week we learned that Jacob and the shepherds were talking by the well and Rachel was coming. Today let’s read Genesis 29:9 and have the Rachel and sheep puppets join them at the well and talk to your Tiny Arrow about Rachel’s job as a shepherd and ask them what she was looking after!

While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherd. – Genesis 29:9 NIV

Day 12

Jacob saw Rachel, moved the stone off the well and watered his uncles sheep! Today let’s read Genesis 29:10 and act out the scene with the puppets!

When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and watered his uncle’s sheep.  – Genesis 29:10 NIV

Day 13

Jacob kissed his cousin Rachel and began to cry aloud! He was so excited to see her! The Lord had not only brought him to Paddan Aram but to his cousin! Today let’s read Genesis 29:11 and act out the scene with the puppets!

Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep aloud.  – Genesis 29:11 NIV

Day 14

Jacob told Rachel who he was then she ran home and told her father! Today let’s read Genesis 29:12 and color and make the Laban and house puppets and act out the scene!

He had told Rachel that he was a relative of her father and a son of Rebekah. So she ran and told her father. – Genesis 29:12 NIV

Day 15

Laban was so excited to see Jacob! He hurried to meet him and brought him back to his house! Today let’s read Genesis 29:13-14 and act out the scene. This is the last day we will be using the puppets!

As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he hurried to meet him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his home, and there Jacob told him all these things. Then Laban said to him, “You are my own flesh and blood.” – Genesis 29:13-14 NIV

Day 16

Jacob made it to Harran! The place he wanted to go! Jacob worked for Laban, and after he had been in Laban’s house there for a whole month, Laban asked him how he wanted to be paid. That is like getting paid for the chores you do and helping around the house. Today let’s read Genesis 29:14-15 and ask your Tiny Arrow if they helped out with chores, how would they want to be rewarded?

After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month, Laban said to him, “Just because you are a relative of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be.” – Genesis 29:14-15 NIV

Day 17

Jacob had gone to Harran to marry one of his cousins. He had two to choose from; Leah or Rachel. Today let’s read Genesis 29:16 and color the coloring page.

Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. – Genesis 29:16 NIV

Day 18

Laban had two daughters, Leah and Rachel. People thought that Rachel was prettier, but the Lord defines beauty by having a gentle and quiet spirit. He sees what is in our hearts rather than what is on the outside! Today let’s read Genesis 29:17, 1 Peter 3:3-4 and 1 Samuel 16:7 and grab a piece of paper, crayons, tape and scissors. Help your Tiny Arrow cut out a heart using the scissors and write “The Lord looks at the heart” on one side and “gentle and quiet spirit” on the other, then tape it over your Tiny Arrows heart. Then explain how we see the outside but he sees our heart and read the verse together then flip it over explaining how we should act.

Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel had a lovely figure and was beautiful. – Genesis 29:17 NIV

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. – 1 Peter 3:3-4 NIV

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7 NIV

Day 19

Jacob wanted his wages to be Rachel! He wanted to marry her! He had to option between Leah and Rachel and he choose Rachel! Today we are going to read Genesis 29:18 and fill out chore chart that we will start tomorrow. Have your Tiny Arrow and you agree what each chore will be for each day and fill it out, then have them choose between two different “rewards” that they will get at after they are done.

Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.” – Genesis 29:18 NIV

Day 20

Laban agreed to what Jacob wanted and let Jacob work for him for 7 years, but they only felt like a few days to Jacob because he loved Rachel so much. Today we are going to read Genesis 29:19 and start the “7 years” by having a chore for each 7 days. One day to represent one year that Jacob worked. Also have your Tiny Arrow work on Saturday and Sunday. After they are done your Tiny Arrow will get their prize! Keep both prizes in sight to remind your Tiny Arrow every day what they are working for!

Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because his love for her. – Genesis 29:19-20 NIV

Day 21

We are going to continue to focus on the 7 years Jacob served for Rachel. Each day we are going to work on filling out the chore chart we made and remind them that one day represents Jacob working for one year!

Day 22

Today we are going to work on the chore chart, just like Jacob worked!

Day 23

Today we are going to work on the chore chart, just like Jacob worked!

Day 24

Today is the last day for the chore chart, just like Jacob worked 7 years your Tiny Arrow worked 7 days! 1 day for each year! When Jacob was done he asked Laban to give him Rachel as his wife! Today let’s read Genesis 29:21 and have your Tiny Arrow tell you what they earned from working for 7 days and that they will get it tomorrow!

Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.” – Genesis 29:21 NIV

Day 25

Laban gave a feast and gave him his daughter to marry. But Laban tricked Jacob and gave him Leah, not Rachel! When Jacob realized what happened he asked Laban why he tricked him! Today let’s read Genesis 29:22-25 and give your Tiny Arrow the second prize, and not the one they were working for to represent Jacob getting Leah not Rachel.

So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast. But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. And Laban gave his servant Zilpah to his daughter as her attendant. When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban “What is thus you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?” – Genesis 29:22-25 NIV

Day 26

We learned Jacob finished his work, but he got Leah instead of Rachel. Laban said it was because the older daughter had to be married first, and told him he could have Rachel too if he worked for another 7 years. But he had to be happy with Leah for a whole week before he could get Rachel! Today let’s read Genesis 29:26-27 and 1 Thessalonians 5:18 then encourage your Tiny Arrow to be happy with the prize they got and to work for another week doing the same chores to get the other prize.

Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one. Finish this daughter’s bridal week; then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work.” – Genesis 29:26-27 NIV

In everything give thanks. – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Day 27

Jacob had to wait a whole week and work another 7 years to get Rachel for his wife! Today let’s do the chore chart again, and next week claim the other prize!

Day 28

Today let’s work on day 2 of the chore chart!

Day 29

Today let’s work on day 3 of the chore chart!

Day 30

Today, and for the next two days, let’s work on days 4-6 of the chore chart!

Day 31

Today is the last day of the chore chart! Jacob waited a week for Rachel, then had to work for another 7 years for her as well! The wait is over and now Jacob gets to marry her! Today let’s read Genesis 29:28, and after your Tiny Arrow has finished their last chore, give them their prize!

Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife. – Genesis 29:28 NIV

Day 32

Jacob had two wives, Leah and Rachel, and Laban gave his daughters a helper! He had already given Zilpah to Leah and now he gave Bilhah to Rachel! Today let’s read Genesis 29:29 and color the coloring page! Save this coloring page for tomorrow too!

Laban gave his servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her attendant. – Genesis 29:29 NIV

Day 33

Even though Jacob had two wives, he loved Rachel more. Today let’s read Genesis 29:30 and draw a small heart between Jacob and Leah and a big heart between Jacob and Rachel from yesterday’s coloring page.

Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah. – Genesis 29:30 NIV

Day 34

Jacob had both of his wives, but now he had to work for another 7 years. Today let’s read Genesis 29:30 and think about all the chores your Tiny Arrow did to earn their prize, how many days it took to earn both, and how many years Jacob worked all together.

And he worked for Laban another seven years. – Genesis 29:30 NIV

Day 35

Jacob had two wives, and when the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he gave her a baby boy, and she named him Reuben! Today let’s read Genesis 29:31-32 and color Leah then draw and color Reuben in the next square and write his name above the meaning of his name! Save this paper for the next three classes.

When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he enabled her to conceive, but Rachel remained childless. Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She names him Reuben, for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now.” – Genesis 29:31-32 NIV

Day 36

Leah had another boy and she named him Simeon! Today let’s read Genesis 29:33 and draw Simeon on the square next to Reuben and write his name above the meaning of his name!

She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon. – Genesis 29:33 NIV

Day 37

Leah had another boy named Levi! Today let’s read Genesis 29:34 and draw Levi in the square under Leah and write his name above the meaning of his name!

Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So she named him Levi. – Genesis 29:34 NIV

Day 38

Leah had one more boy, Judah! Today let’s ready Genesis 29:35 and draw Judah and write his name next to Levi, then draw the family in the empty square next to Judah!

She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children. – Genesis 29:35 NIV

Day 39

Today let’s reread Genesis 29 and remember the activities and verses we learned!
