Day 1
We ended Genesis 17, and now we are starting Genesis 18! In preparation for the lessons to come, let’s read all of Genesis 18 to your Tiny Arrows!
Day 2
One day Abraham was sitting outside his tent and the Lord appeared to him! Sometimes people would sit outside their tents to greet and talk to people who were passing by! Today, let’s read Genesis 18:1, sit at your front porch and see if anyone walks by and greet them or pretend greeting each other when someone walks by a certain room in your house!
The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. – Genesis 18:1 NIV
Day 3
When Abraham looked up, he saw three men standing close by! He ran to meet them! Abraham was showing respect and kindness to the men! Let’s read Genesis 18:2 and greet someone with respect and kindness!
Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. – Genesis 18:2 NIV
Day 4
Abraham did a very good job at showing kindness to strangers. He sat outside and greeted people, when he met people he showed them respect; he even wanted to serve them! Today let’s read Genesis 18:3 and talk to our Tiny Arrows about different ways they can serve and be kind when someone comes over to visit!
He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by.” – Genesis 18:3 NIV
Day 5
Abraham wanted to be a good servant! Not only did he want to give the men some water to wash their feet, but something to eat too! He even gave up his seat so the men could have some shade when they sat down! Today let’s be good servants too! Let’s read Genesis 18:4-6 and ask your Tiny Arrow to prepare and serve a snack to someone.
“Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.” “Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.” – Genesis 18:4-5 NIV
Day 6
Today let’s make bread! Making bread with leaven or yeast takes a lot of time, Abraham asked Sarah to be quick and make bread for his guests! Today let’s read Genesis 18:6 make unleavened bread!
So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.” – Genesis 18:6 NIV
Recipe
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1/8 tap salt
- 1/3 cup water
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix flour, oil, and salt together in a bowl; add water and mix using a pastry cutter until dough is soft. Form dough into 6 balls and press into disks onto the prepared baking sheet using your hands.
- Bake in the preheated oven until bread is cooked, 8 to 10 minutes.
Day 7
Abraham had asked Sarah to prepare bread, but he wanted to give the men some meat too! He went and found one of his best calves to have it prepared. Abraham did not serve the men leftovers or something that he would not want to eat, he gave them something good! Today let’s read Genesis 18:7 and think, if you were to serve someone the best that is in your kitchen, what would it be?
Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. – Genesis 18:7 NIV
Day 8
Abraham brought the men curds (butter), milk, and meat then stood near by. Do you think he stood near by to see if they needed anything else? Like a waiter at a restaurant? Do you think he wanted to be there in case they wanted to talk to him? Let’s read Genesis 18:8 then ask your Tiny Arrow why they thought Abraham wanted to stand near by but not join them in eating.
Bonus! Put Abraham’s actions into practice. Have your Tiny Arrow serve someone a snack and stand near them and see what they would do!
He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree. – Genesis 18:8 NIV
Day 9
While Abraham was standing near his guests, the men talked and asked him a question. They asked where his wife Sarah was. Sarah was very important to Abraham and he knew exactly where she was. Let’s read Genesis 18:9 and ask your Tiny Arrow about something important of there’s and if they know where it is.
Bonus: During Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Even though Mary and Joesph were having trouble finding a place to stay, God knew exactly where they were. He even knew exactly where Jesus was laying when he told the shepherds where to find the Messiah! Let’s read Luke 2:12 and find out where Jesus was!
“Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There, in the tent,” he said. – Genesis 18:9 NIV
“This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” – Luke 2:12 NIV
Day 10
We talked about Abraham having some guests over. He served them and they asked where Sarah, his wife, was. Then they told Abraham that about this time next year Sarah would have a son! The son God promised Abram! She would have Isaac! Could you imagine how excited Abraham must have been! This is something he had been waiting for for a long time! He probably did not expect his guests to tell him this! Let’s read Genesis 18:10 and do something exciting and unexpected for someone else today!
Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” – Genesis 18:10 NIV
Day 11
Yesterday we learned that Abraham’s guests told him Sarah would have a son! Sarah heard them too, but both her and Abraham were already very old. Sarah heard something she thought was impossible. Today let’s read Genesis 18:10-11 then think about different stories in the Bible that we might have thought would have been impossible, but with God’s help they happened!
Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. – Genesis 18:10-11 NIV
Day 12
Sarah heard what the guests had said and laughed! She didn’t believe it could happen! Every promise God says is Yes in Christ! We need to take captive every thought that is against what God promised! Today let’s read Genesis 18:12, 2 Corinthians 1:20 and 10:5 then grab a sheet of paper and cut it into 6-12 pieces. Write “Thought” on the paper then have your Tiny Arrow stand before you. Throw the papers in the air one at a time and have your Tiny Arrow catch them. Once he does put them in an “obedient to Christ” pile. Continue until all the thoughts are obedient!
So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” – Genesis 18:12 NIV
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. – 2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV
We take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ. – 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV
Day 13
God had told Abraham in the last chapter that he would have a son with Sarah. Then one of his guests told Abraham again that he would have a son. Now we find out that it was really the Lord telling Abraham he would have a son next year! Let’s read Genesis 18:13-14 then tell your Tiny Arrows some of the promises God has given you or your family then praise and worship because nothing it too hard for the Lord!
Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” – Genesis 18:13-14 NIV
Day 14
When Sarah was discovered to have laughed at what God said she was afraid and lied. Nothing is hidden from God! Let’s read Genesis 18:15 then Hebrews 4:13. What Sarah had said and why she said it was not hidden from God! Today let’s read and try to memorize Hebrews 4:13!
Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.” – Genesis 18:15 NIV
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. – Hebrews 4:13 NIV
Day 15
We learned that Abraham’s guests told him he would have a son soon and that his guest was really the Lord! The men got up to leave and Abraham went with them to see them on their way. Abraham did not want to leave the Lord’s presence and decided to walk with him so he could be with him for a little while longer! It’s like when you are playing with a friend and do not want them to leave because you would miss them! Today let’s read Genesis 18:16 and make a card or a letter for a friend and give it to them!
When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. – Genesis 18:16 NIV
Day 16
The Lord went to visit Abraham, but he also had something else to do. Today let’s read Genesis 18:17 and grab a blanket or towel. Sit down, and have your Tiny Arrow sit in front of you. Then put the towel or blanket on top of your hands and do something with your hands. You can move your hands, make something with play-doh, build blocks, etc. Tell them right now you are hiding what you are doing, but the Lord was thinking about telling Abraham what he was about to do. Now take away the towel or blanket and do the activity again and show them what you were doing.
Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?” – Genesis 18:17 NIV
Day 17
The Lord wanted to tell Abraham what he was about to do. He knew Abraham would become a powerful nation and all nations would be blessed through him. Abraham did not have a son yet, but he had a nephew Lot. The one he rescued. Lot lived in Sodom, and Abraham could also bless the nations that would come from him! Today let’s read Genesis 18:18 and think about different ways Abraham has blessed us!
“Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.” – Genesis 18:18 NIV
Day 18
The Lord chose Abraham to be a great and powerful nation, and to always keep the way of the Lord and do what is right and just. Today let’s read Genesis 18:19 and pray that your household will keep the way of the Lord, by doing what is right and just!
“For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” – Genesis 18:19 NIV
Day 19
The Lord decided to tell Abraham what he was going to do! The people in the city that Abraham’s nephew Lot lived in were not being good. They were being sinful. They were being so bad that God wanted to go down and see it. This is like someone telling their parent that something is wrong and them going to go and see if what you explained is true. Let’s read Genesis 18:20-21 and have your Tiny Arrow go to their room then come back. Have them explain their room to you. Is it clean, messy, dirty, etc. Then go check out their room and see if what they said was true! If it is not an accurate description, encourage them to do better next time.
Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.” – Genesis 18:20-21 NIV
Day 20
The other two men with the Lord traveled toward Sodom, but Abraham remained with the Lord. God trusted the word of the men with him to report back if what was being said was true. It is important to always be truthful so people will believe what you say. Let’s read Genesis 18:22 and do the exercise with your Tiny Arrow’s room (or another room) and when they report back tell them you trust what they told you is the truth!
The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord. – Genesis 18:22 NIV
Day 21
Abraham knew that the Lord was going to judge the cities that were being bad and did not want the people that were righteous to be punished too! Remember Abraham’s nephew Lot lived in that city! So Abraham asked the Lord if his punishment would hurt those who were righteous along with those that were bad. Today let’s read Genesis 18:23 and grab and few toys and a broom (or something similar). Have a few toys represent righteous people and a few wicked. Tell them Abraham asked God if he would sweep away the righteous with the wicked. Then sweep all the toys together into one place.
Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?” – Genesis 18:23 NIV
Day 22
Abraham was bold and asked the Lord if there were 50 righteous people if he would not destroy the whole city. Today let’s read Genesis 18:24-25 and print out the coloring page. Have your Tiny Arrow draw a circle around fifty people in the “Circle 50 Righteous People” group to see how many had to be righteous. Keep this paper for the next few lessons.
“What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” – Genesis 18:24-25 NIV
Day 23
Yesterday we learned that Abraham asked the Lord if he would spare the whole city if he found 50 righteous people. The Lord said yes! If he would spare the whole city if he found fifty righteous people! Today let’s read Genesis 18:26 and circle the entire group of people on the “Circle 50 Righteous People” section on yesterday’s coloring page since they would be saved! Save this paper for the next few lessons!
The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” – Genesis 18:26 NIV
Day 24
We talked about Abraham asking the Lord if he would spare the city of Sodom if there were 50 righteous people and the Lord said yes! Then Abraham asked him if there were only 45 would he spare it and God said yes too! Today let’s read Genesis 18:27-28 and get the coloring page from the previous lesson and circle 45 people in the “Circle 45 Righteous People” section then the entire group!
Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, what if the number of righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for the lack of five people?” “If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.” – Genesis 18:27-28 NIV
Day 25
God said he would spare Sodom if there were 45 righteous people. But Abraham asked if there were only 40 people would he spare the city and God said yes! Today let’s read Genesis 18:29 and get out the previous lessons coloring page. In the “Circle 40 Righteous People” section circle 40 people and then the whole group!
Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?” He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.” – Genesis 18:29 NIV
Day 26
God said he would spare Sodom if there were 40 righteous people. But Abraham asked again if there were only 30 people would he spare the city and God said yes! Today let’s read Genesis 18:30 and circle 30 people in the “Circle 30 Righteous People” section and then the whole group!
Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?” He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” – Genesis 18:30 NIV
Day 27
God said he would spare Sodom if there were 30 righteous people. But Abraham asked if there were only 20 people would be spare the city and God said yes! Today let’s read Genesis 18:31 and circle 20 people in the “Circle 20 Righteous People” section and then the whole group!
Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?” He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.” – Genesis 18:31 NIV
Day 28
Abraham kept on asking God if he would spare the city by reducing the number of righteous people and God kept agreeing! For the last time Abraham asked if there were 10 righteous people could the city be spared and God said yes! They finished talking and both left. Today let’s read Genesis 18:32-33 and circle 10 people from the “Circle 10 Righteous People” section and then the whole group! Save this paper for later to compare how many people were actually righteous and to see if the city was saved!
Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?” He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.” When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home. – Genesis 18:32-33 NIV
Day 29
Today let’s reread Genesis 18 and remember the activities and verses we learned!
