Genesis 20

Day 1

We ended Genesis 19, and now we are starting Genesis 20! In preparation for the lessons to come, let’s read all of Genesis 20 to your Tiny Arrows!

Day 2

Abraham was told that in a year Sarah would have a child, witnessed the smoke from Sodom and Gomorrah then moved from there to Gerar. Gerar was where the Philistines lived! He told everyone there that Sarah was his sister and the king of Gerar took her! Let’s read Genesis 20:1-2 and talk. Ask your Tiny Arrow something that they really want. Tell them, Sarah was about to become pregnant for the first time, something she really wanted and now she was not able to because she was not with Abraham anymore. That is like you were promised a toy (something they really want) and your parents had bought it, but it would be placed on a high shelf, somewhere you couldn’t reach. You could see it and know it was for you, but you couldn’t have it. That must be how Sarah felt!

Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar, and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” Then Abimelek king or Gerar sent for Sarah and took her. – Genesis 20:1-2 NIV

Day 3

God can choose to speak to us through dreams! He spoke to the king of the Philistines, Abimelek through a dream and told her that Sarah was already married! Today let’s read Genesis 20:3 and ask your Tiny Arrow if they can remember their dream and share yours if you remember yours! Then ask them if they know a different story in the Bible that mentions dreams too!

But God came to Abimelek in a dream one night and said to him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.” – Genesis 20:3 NIV

Day 4

Not only did God speak to Abimelek in his dream, but Abimelek spoke to God! God had threatened him because of what he had done and now Abimelek is telling God that he did not know that what he had done was wrong. He had thought he was innocent. He said he had done it with clean hands. Today let’s read Genesis 20:4-5 then get your Tiny Arrows hands dirty! Then explain for Abimelek the dirt represented sinning. Now clean your Tiny Arrow’s hands and tell them that Abimelek did not know he was sinning and said he had clean hands free from sin!

Now Abimelek had not gone near her, so he said, “Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation? Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister,’ and didn’t she also say, ‘He is my brother’? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands.” – Genesis 20:4-5 NIV

Day 5

We learned that Abimelek said he was free from sinning with Sarah. God told him that he kept Abimelek from sinning! Today let’s read Genesis 20:6-7 and go to where you got your Tiny Arrow’s hands dirty the day before. Have your Tiny Arrow place there hands above the place they got dirty and explain that God prevented Abimelek from dirtying his hands. Now place your hand under there’s to prevent there’s from getting dirty. Now if Abimelek chose to not return Sarah he would be getting his hands dirty and the consequence would be death.

Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her. Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.” – Genesis 20:6-7 NIV

Day 6

We learned that Abimelek had a dream where God told him to return Sarah to Abraham or he would die. The next day Abimelek told all his friends what he had dreamed and they were all afraid. Abimelek and his friends were being wise to fear God! Let’s read Genesis 20:8 then Proverbs 9:10! Today let’s try to memorize Proverbs 9:10.

Early the next morning Abimelek summoned all his officials, and hence he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid. – Genesis 20:8 NIV

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. – Proverbs 9:10

Day 7

We learned Abimelek took Sarah and God told him a dream to give her back to Abraham or he would die! So Abimelek asked Abraham why he would do something that would harm him. Today let’s read Genesis 20:9-10, color the coloring page and talk about consequences. What Abraham said effected not only Sarah but Abimelek and his kingdom! Then have your Tiny Arrow circle everything that was effected because of what Abraham said.

Then Abimelek called Abraham in and said, “What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.” And Abimelek asked Abraham, “What was your reason for doing this?” – Genesis 20:9-10 NIV

Day 8

We talked about consequences. What Abraham told Abimelek effected him and his kingdom and Sarah. Abimelek asked why Abraham did it, and Abraham explained that he did not think they feared God and that he would be killed because of Sarah. We also learned that Abimelek was afraid of God when he spoke to him in his dream. Today let’s read Genesis 20:11-13 carefully with your Tiny Arrows and ask them if they think Abraham was fearing or trusting God by telling everyone that Sarah was his sister, or if he was fearing other people by worrying about how they would react.

Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’ Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife. And when God told me to wander from my father’s household, I said to her, ‘This is how you can show your love me: everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’” – Genesis 20:11-13 NIV

Day 9

Abimelek did not get mad or attack Abraham, instead he brought him gifts and gave him Sarah back. Today read Genesis 20:14 and color! Have your Tiny Arrow (with your help) cut out the sheep, cow, boy, girl and Sarah; everything Abraham was given, and glue them next to Abraham! (Save this paper for the next lesson)

Then Abimelek brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarah his wife to him. – Genesis 20:14

Day 10

In the previous lesson we learned that Abimelek gave Abraham presents then he told him to live wherever he liked. Then he gave some money to Abraham to say sorry for Sarah. Today let’s read Genesis 20:15-16 then grab the piece of paper from yesterday. Let’s draw some money next to Abraham, then flip the paper over and ask your Tiny Arrow if they could live anywhere, what would be there? The beach? Mountains? A forest? Then draw it!

And Abimelek said, “My land is before you; live wherever you like.” To Sarah he said, “I am giving your brother a thousand shekels of silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated.” – Genesis 20:15-16 NIV

Day 11

The Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s house from getting pregnant, the very thing that Sarah was going to be! Abraham prayed to God and he healed Abimelek and all the women so they could get pregnant again! Not only are they able to get pregnant, but soon Sarah will be pregnant too! Today let’s read Genesis 20:17-18 and pray. Let’s thank God for all the babies we know, for letting their mommies get pregnant and all who’s already pregnant, then let’s pray for all the women you know who want to be pregnant!

Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again, for the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife Sarah. – Genesis 20:17-18 NIV

Day 12

Today let’s reread Genesis 20 and remember the activities and verses we learned!
