Genesis 34

Day 1

We ended Genesis 33, and now we are starting Genesis 34! In preparation for the lessons to come, let’s read all of Genesis 34 to your Tiny Arrows!

Day 2

Leah had 6 sons and 1 daughter named Dinah! Dinah’s name means judged or vindicated! While she was in Shechem she went out to visit some of the women who lived nearby! Like she was going to a friends house! Today let’s read Genesis 34:1 and ask your Tiny Arrow, if they could visit any friend nearby, who would it be?

Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. – Genesis 34:1 NIV

Day 3

While Dinah was visiting the women, the son of an important man in the city saw her. He took her and did things to her like they were married! Things he was not supposed to do! Today let’s read Genesis 34:2 and color the coloring page!

When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her. – Genesis 34:2 NIV

Day 4

The son of the important man who saw Dinah was named Shechem, the same name as the city! Shechem saw Dinah and loved her! He loved her so much he told his father he wanted to marry her! Today let’s read Genesis 34:3-4 and make a valentine! Cut out a heart using red paper and write Shechem loves Dinah on it!

His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob; he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her. And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.” – Genesis 34:3-4 NIV

Day 5

Jacob was at home when Dinah had gone out to see the women of Shechem, but when he heard that Dinah had been taken and mistreated he waited to do something until his sons came inside from taking care of the animals. Jacob was being slow to anger and to act on that anger. Today let’s read Genesis 34:5 and James 1:19 and encourage your Tiny Arrow to follow this verse and remind them of it throughout the day!

When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home. – Genesis 34:5 NIV

Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak; and slow to become angry. – James 1:19 NIV

Day 6

We learned that Dinah had been taken by a man named Shechem, and then he wanted to marry her! So his father went to talk to Jacob about letting Dinah marry his son! Today let’s read Genesis 34:6 and color the coloring page!

Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. – Genesis 34:6 NIV

Day 7

Jacob had been waiting to do anything about Dinah until his sons had come home. But his sons heard what had happened to their sister and were mad! They ran home to talk to their dad about it! Today let’s read Genesis 34:7 and have a race! Have your child stand somewhere outside, near the house, then tell them to run home as fast as they can! Just like Jacob’s sons had come home quickly!

Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious because Shechem and done an outrageous thing in Israel by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done. – Genesis 34:7 NIV

Day 8

Hamor, Shechem’s father was at Jacob’s house and asked Jacob if Dinah could marry his son Shechem! Today let’s read Genesis 34:8 and talk to your Tiny Arrow about your proposal or of the proposal of someone they know!

But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem had set his heart on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.” – Genesis 34:8 NIV

Day 9

Shechem and his father were talking with Jacob about allowing Dinah to marry Shechem! They told Jacob that the people who lived in the city of Shechem could marry the women in Jacob’s family and the men in Jacob’s family could marry the women in there’s! Today let’s read Genesis 34:9 and talk with your Tiny Arrows about you, someone they know or someone in the Bible! Talk about if you married someone from where you grew up, or someone from a different town, state or country! Just like they wanted Dinah to marry someone from a city she just moved too!

“Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.” – Genesis 34:9 NIV

Day 10

Shechem and his father wanted Jacob and his family to be apart of the community! Not only with Dinah marrying someone from the city, but with Jacob and his family owning more land and trading with the people! Today let’s read Genesis 34:10 and pretend play! Have your Tiny Arrow grab some objects that they can “trade” and have them move to a different room of the house, like the living room. Be in the living room and have a few things you can “trade” too! Then have them introduce themselves as a newcomer in town and ask you if they want to trade! Just like Shechem and his father wanted Jacob to trade!

“You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it.” – Genesis 34:10 NIV

Day 11

Shechem wanted to marry Dinah! He was at Jacob’s house asking her father for permission to marry her! Shechem was willing to give or pay them whatever they asked so that he could marry her! Today let’s read Genesis 34:11-12 and grab something your Tiny Arrow wants, maybe a cookie, or small toy. Then tell them Shechem was willing to give a lot in order to marry Dinah, and what would they be willing to give in order to get the cookie or toy? Would they give a penny? Would they do a chore?

Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask. Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.” – Genesis 34:11-12 NIV

Day 12

Dinah’s brothers knew that Shechem had mistreated Dinah and were not speaking truthfully to Shechem and his father. They said that whoever married Dinah had to be circumcised like them! God had told Abraham that everyone in his house and family had to be circumcised! Today let’s read Genesis 34:13-14 and Genesis 17:9-14 and learn about what God said to Abraham about being circumcised!

Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. They said to him, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.” – Genesis 34:13-14 NIV

God also said to Abraham, “As for you, My covenant you must keep, you and your seed after you throughout their generations. This is My covenant that you must keep between Me and you and your seed after you: all your males must be circumcised. You must be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and this will become a sign of the covenant between Me and you. Also your eight-day-olds must be circumcised, every male, throughout your generations, including a house-born slave or a slave bought with money from any foreigner who is not of your seed. Your house-born slave and your purchased slave must surely be circumcised. So My covenant will be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. But the uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin—that person will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.” – Genesis 17:9-14

Day 13

Dinah’s brothers told Shechem they would agree with him if all the men in the city become circumcised like them! Today let’s read Genesis 34:15 and grab 2 things you can trade. Then have you and your Tiny Arrow have fun choosing something that will represent what someone else has to have so they can trade with you. For example, you might say I can only trade with you if you are wearing shoes, and then they would put on shoes, then your Tiny Arrow could say I will only trade with you if you have a hat on, and you would put on a hat and then trade.

“We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.” – Genesis 34:15 NIV

Day 14

Dinah’s brothers said if all the men in the city were circumcised then they would marry the daughters in the city and let Dinah marry Shechem. They would be like one large family! Today let’s read Genesis 34:16 and grab a handful of characters or dolls. Then combine them into small groups as lots of smaller families, then put them all together as one larger group as a larger family!

“Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We’ll settle among you and become one people with you.” – Genesis 34:16 NIV

Day 15

Dinah’s brothers told Shechem if they do not want to be circumcised, then there is no way Shechem could marry Dinah! But Shechem and his father agreed! They made a deal! Today let’s read Genesis 34:17-18 and make a deal with your Tiny Arrows! Have it be something you both agree on and fun! For example, if your Tiny Arrow picks up their room, you agree to take them to the park!

“But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.” Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. – Genesis 34:17-18 NIV

Day 16

Dinah’s brothers and Shechem agreed that if the men of the city were circumcised then they would be like one family! So Shechem hurried to tell the men of the city what they agreed to! They went to the city gate to talk to them! Today let’s read Genesis 34:19-20 and find a nearby gate. Then explain how Shechem and his father went to the gate to talk to the people, and then stay at the gate and have your Tiny Arrow come to you and talk to you at the gate!

The young man, who was the most honored of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to the men of their city. – Genesis 34:19-20 NIV

Day 17

Shechem and his father met the men at the gate of the city and were talking with them. They were trying to explain the deal that they wanted to make with Jacob’s family. That they could trade, live with them and let their daughters marry Jacob’s sons. Today let’s read Genesis 34:21 and color the coloring page and draw land in the first bubble, an object in the second bubble and a girl in the third bubble! Save this coloring page for the rest of the week!

“These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.” – Genesis 34:21 NIV

Day 18

Shechem and his father continued to talk to the men at the gate of the city and explained to them what they had talked with Jacob about! If Jacob’s family lived there they could trade, have land and marry the people of the city! All the men of Shechem had to do was circumcise their males! Today let’s read Genesis 34:22 and add a man in the fourth bubble on yesterday’s coloring page!

“But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on one condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.” – Genesis 34:22 NIV

Day 19

Shechem and his father were still talking to the men at the gate of the city about Jacob! They would be like one family! Everything they had would be there’s too! They could share their animals and things! Today let’s read Genesis 34:23 and add an animal in the fifth bubble on yesterday’s coloring page!

“Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.” – Genesis 34:23 NIV

Day 20

Shechem and his father talked to the men at the city gate and they agreed with them! They would circumcise all the men of the city! Today let’s read Genesis 34:24 and add a checkmark in the last bubble on yesterday’s coloring page!

All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his sons Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised. – Genesis 34:24 NIV

Day 21

The men of Shechem agreed to be circumcised like Dinah’s brothers asked them too. Then, Simeon and Levi took their swords and killed every male in the city! Then they rescued Dinah and brought her home! Today let’s read Genesis 34:25-26 and rescue Dinah! Cut and color the Dinah coloring page, then either hide her for your Tiny Arrow to find or put her somewhere that will be challenging for your Tiny Arrow to get her and have them get her!

Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male. They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem’s house and left. – Genesis 34:25-26 NIV

Day 22

Simeon and Levi put all the men of Shechem to the sword and rescued Dinah. Then Dinah’s brothers took everything the people owned! They also took their flocks, herds and donkeys! Today let’s read Genesis 34:27-28 and cut out the sheep, goats, cows and donkeys then hide them and have your Tiny Arrow find them!

The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled. They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields. – Genesis 34:27-28 NIV

Day 23

Dinah’s brothers took everything the people in Shechem owned! Then they took their money and families! Oh my! Today let’s read Genesis 34:29 and give your Tiny Arrow a bag, and tell them to fill the bag with as much stuff from your house in 30 seconds and see how much they can get!

They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses. – Genesis 34:29 NIV

Day 24

Jacob was not happy about what his sons had done. He did not want the people in Canaan to be mad at him! He knew if they had to fight, it would be a lot of people vs a few people! Today let’s read Genesis 30-31 and ask your Tiny Arrow if they can think of a story in the Bible where a lot of people fought only a few people and the few people won! Like Gideon and his 300 men against the large Midianite army in Judges 7!

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me obnoxious to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.” But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?” – Genesis 34:30-31 NIV

Day 25

Today let’s reread Genesis 34 and remember the activities and verses we learned!
