Day 1
We ended Genesis 18, and now we are starting Genesis 19! In preparation for the lessons to come, let’s read all of Genesis 19 to your Tiny Arrows!
Day 2
We learned that Abraham was sitting outside his tent and treated the three guests with respect. When the two men who had met with Abraham went to Sodom, Lot, his nephew, met the men at the city gate and treated them with respect too! Today let’s read Genesis 19:1 and Genesis 18:2 then print out the coloring page and check off what Abraham did vs what Lot! There are some that happen in a different order, so read and listen closely! We will checking off this list for the next three lessons!
The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. – Genesis 19:1 NIV
Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. – Genesis 18:2
Day 3
In the previous lesson we compared how Abraham and Lot met the same people! They both greeted them with respect! Now let’s compare what happened next. Abraham did not want the men to pass him by and Lot did not want the men to go anywhere but his house! They both wanted them to come over! Let’s read Genesis 19:2 and 18:3 and check off the check list from yesterday!
“My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.” “No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.” – Genesis 19:2 NIV
He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by.” – Genesis 18:3
Day 4
Abraham and Lot both invited the men to their places. Let’s see what happens next! The men said they would go to Abraham’s house and Lots house! Let’s read Genesis 19:3 and 18:4-5 and check off the check list!
But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. – Genesis 19:3 NIV
“Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.” “Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.” – Genesis 18:4-5
Day 5
In the lesson let’s finish up our checklist by comparing what Lot did in Genesis 19:3 and what Abraham did in Genesis 18:6-8. Lot made the men a meal and unleavened bread and Abraham gave them a meal of unleavened bread, meat, milk and curds! Lot learned a lot from Abraham about how to treat guests! Abraham got to take care of them during the day, and Lot that night!
BONUS: Now let’s think who was the discipler and who was the disciple? Do you think the one who discipled should have done more or the one who was discipled?
He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. – Genesis 19:3 NIV
So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.” Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree. – Genesis 18:6-8
Day 6
We learned at the end in Genesis 18 that Abraham was asking God to spare Sodom and Gomorrah if there were 10 righteous people. Then we learned at the beginning of Genesis 19 that Lot, Abraham’s nephew, invited the two angels to his house for the night. He gave them dinner, but before they could go to bed some people from the city came and surrounded Lot’s house. They did not come to welcome Lot’s guests and to be kind, but they were there to be wicked. One of the reasons why God wanted to destroy the city was because of their sinful hearts. What they did showed their hearts by their sinful actions. Today let’s read Genesis 19:4-6 and color the coloring page. Color the heart black if the thought and action is sinful or red if it is righteous!
Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.” – Genesis 19:4-6 NIV
Day 7
In the previous lesson we saw that the people in Sodom were wicked. They wanted to hurt the two angels but instead of letting the men have the angels Lot offered his two daughters instead! Oh no! It’s like Lot offered one sin in place of another! Today let’s read Genesis 19:6-8 and give this example with the coloring page. It’s like someone was mad at you and told you they were going to punch you. Have your Tiny Arrow color the first heart black. So you offered to let them kick you instead. Now color the second heart black. Both options are wrong because they are being done with a sinful heart. Instead let’s stop and say James 1:20 then color the third heart red for being righteous.
Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. Look I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like to them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.” – Genesis 19:6-8 NIV
Human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. – James 1:20
Day 8
Yesterday we read that Lot was offering a bad option with another bad option. Do you think the wicked men liked Lot’s option? No! In fact the threatened to hurt Lot too! Oh no! Offering a bad option just made it even worse! Let’s read Genesis 19:9 and ask your Tiny Arrow who the righteous judge is. God! Let’s read Psalm 7:11 and color the persons heart black first, then their entire body. Because they had sin in their heart, they were going to act sinful and do bad things. (Save this picture for the next lesson to show how the sin covered their eyes.)
“Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge. We’ll treat you worse then them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door. – Genesis 19:9 NIV
God is a righteous judge. – Psalm 7:11
Day 9
In the previous lesson we read that the wicked men were going to do even more wicked things! Let’s see how the angels reacted to the men’s wickedness and read Genesis 19:10-11. They shut the door and blinded the men! Oh my! It is like the men were already so blinded by sin they could not see rightly anyways! Today let’s look at the coloring page from yesterday, and show how the sin had spread and covered their eyes, then read Psalm 51:10 and pray that we would not be blind to any wickedness in ourselves but to ask God to create a pure heart within us!
But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door. – Genesis 19:10-11
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. – Psalm 51:10
Day 10
Let’s remember that God was going to destroy the city, but he wouldn’t if he found 10 righteous people. In such a big city there were not even 10 righteous people! Oh my! Today let’s read Genesis 19:12-13 and build a town or wall or building with blocks or something that can topple. God was going to destroy the city, but he was kind to Lot and his family and told them to leave! After you build the town have some characters play the part of Lot and his family and let them escape before you let your Tiny Arrow destroy the city.
The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.” – Genesis 19:12-13 NIV
Day 11
We learned that God was about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah and his angels warned Lot to get out! So Lot found his two sons-in-law and warned them to leave! But they thought he was joking! Today let’s read Genesis 19:14 and ask your Tiny Arrows if they think that Lot’s sons-in-law feared the Lord. No! Then let’s pray that we would always fear the Lord take God’s warnings seriously!
So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!“ But his sons-in-law thought he was joking. – Genesis 19:14 NIV
Day 12
In the previous lesson we learned that Lot tried to save his sons-in-law but they thought he was joking. So the angels told Lot to take his wife and daughters and leave, but Lot didn’t obey right away! So the angels had to lead him by the hand and take them out of the city! That is like when we are about to do something that can harm us and our parents tell us no! When we do not respond quickly enough they lead us by the hand away from danger! Let’s read Genesis 19:15-16 and have some pretend play. Pretend situations where your Tiny Arrow might get into harm and you tell them no, then take them by the hand and lead them to safety.
With the coming of the dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.“ When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them. – Genesis 19:15-16 NIV
Day 13
The angels had led Lot and his family out of the city, but they still weren’t safe! They had to leave the plain around the city too! They had to run all the way to the mountains to be saved! That means the way God was going to destroy the cities would always effect the areas around them. Today let’s read Genesis 19:17 and make a volcano! Grab a bowl, 1/2 cup of vinegar, a few drops of dish soap and 1/3 cup baking soda (for clean up maybe put the bowl on a baking sheet so the overflow is easy to clean up). Place the baking soda and dish soap in the bowl and tell them the bowl represents the city. The slowly add the vinegar and as the solution expands outside the bowl tell them not only was the city destroyed but the areas around it too!
As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!” – Genesis 19:17 NIV
Day 14
The city and areas around it were going to be destroyed. But Lot did not think he could run to the mountains fast enough and asked if he could run to the city Zoar instead and still be safe! The angels agreed to spare Zoar too! Let’s read Genesis 19:18-22 and ask your Tiny Arrow if they remember the volcano experiment from yesterday. Isn’t it amazing that God can do things with complete accuracy! He could spare the town Lot wanted to run to! Let’s grab something to throw and a basket. Throw something into the basket and tell them God could throw something into the basket perfectly each time! He has great accuracy! Then let your Tiny Arrows have a turn too!
But Lot said to them, “No, my lords, please! Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small isn’t it? Then my life will be spared. He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar. – Genesis 19:18-22 NIV
Day 15
Lot was going to go to Zoar instead of the mountain, so he did. He ran to Zoar. When he reached the city God rained down burning sulfur and destroyed the cities and the plain. Everything that grew and was standing was destroyed. But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar or salt! Today let’s read Genesis 19:23-26 and grab some salt, a salt shaker, a bottle cap or something small to be the cities, and 4 characters to represent Lot and his family. Place the “city” on a baking sheet (if you want easy clean up) and have the the city in the center. Have your Tiny Arrows move the characters away and off the baking sheet while you start to rain down salt on the city and everything around it. Then have one character turn back and replace the character with the salt shaker. Now let your Tiny Arrows help you “rain down sulfur” on the city and plain.
By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. – Genesis 19:23-26 NIV
Day 16
Abraham had asked God to spare the city if there were 10 righteous people. Even though there was not 10 righteous people in the city and God destroyed it, God spared Abraham’s nephew Lot. Lot and his daughters were the only survivors. Abraham stood at the same spot he had spoken with God and saw the smoke from the cities. Let’s read Genesis 19:27-29 and color the coloring page.
Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord. He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace. So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived. – Genesis 19:27-29 NIV
Day 17
Lot and his daughters left the small town and went to live in the mountains instead. They found a cave and lived there. Let’s read Genesis 19:30 and make a cave (fort)!
Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. – Genesis 19:30 NIV
Day 18
The men Lot’s daughters were suppose to marry died in Sodom. His daughters did not see any other men to marry and have children with so they decided to try to have a baby with their father instead. Something God did not want them to do! Today let’s read Genesis 19:31-32 and let’s write down some of the things your Tiny Arrow would want in their future spouse and then pray that they will find the spouse God wants them to marry in His perfect timing!
One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is custom all over the earth. Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.” – Genesis 19:31-32 NIV
Day 19
Yesterday we learned that Lot’s daughters were going to try to have a baby with their father. They didn’t even ask their father about it! Let’s read Genesis 19:33-35 and talk to our Tiny Arrows. Discuss if there is something they want to do, or have done that they would not want to share with their parents, then it is probably something they should not be doing. That is like if they try to do something and think they are hiding it from God. God sees everything! Then tell them Hebrews 4:13.
That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. The next day the older daughter said to the younger. “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. – Genesis 19:33-35 NIV
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. – Hebrews 4:13
Day 20
Both of Lot’s daughter became pregnant and had sons. Their sons were the founders of the Moabites and the Ammonites. Today let’s read Genesis 19:36-38 and trace the areas the Moabites and Ammonites lived!
So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites today. The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites today. – Genesis 19:36-38 NIV
Day 26
Today let’s reread Genesis 19 and remember the activities and verses we learned!
