Exodus 5

Day 1

We ended Exodus 4, and now we are starting Exodus 5! In preparation for the lessons to come, let’s read all of Exodus 5 to your Tiny Arrows!

Day 2

Moses and Aaron visited Pharaoh! They told him what God wanted them to say! To let God’s people go! Today let’s read Exodus 5:1 and what God told Moses in Exodus 3:18.

Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.’” – Exodus 5:1 NIV

“Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.’” – Exodus 3:18 NIV

Day 3

Moses and Aaron asked Pharaoh if the Israelites could go on a journey to the wilderness! Pharaoh said no! He said no because he did not know God and did not want to obey him! In Egypt there are lots of false gods, but no one worshiped the one true God! Today let’s read Exodus 5:2 and tell your Tiny Arrow some of the god’s Egyptians worshiped. Some of them were Ra, the god of the sun, Horus, a kingship god and Onuris a god of war and hunting. There were gods for some many different things, but still they did not worship the God who made everything!

Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go. – Exodus 5:2 NIV

Day 4

Pharaoh said no, but Moses and Aaron did not leave right away! They again told Pharaoh what God had said. They even told him if they didn’t do what God said, there would be consequences! Today let’s read Exodus 5:3 and talk about things keeping your Tiny Arrow from obeying God. Explain a circumstance where they might have trouble obeying because they are being distracted, are fearful or don’t have what they need. Moses and Aaron wanted to obey God, but Pharaoh was keeping them from obeying. Then ask your Tiny Arrow to go and get something, but before they leave, hold them back. Explain that they are trying to obey; but you are not helping. Just like Moses and Aaron are trying to obey, but Pharaoh is not helping!

Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.” – Exodus 5:3 NIV

Day 5

Moses and Aaron asked Pharaoh twice to obey God, and Pharaoh said no each time! He even got mad at them for having the people not work. Then he told them to get back to work! Today let’s read Exodus 5:4 and have your Tiny Arrow ask you to do something, and reply to them to “get back to work”. Explain that Moses and Aaron were trying to do something else, but Pharaoh just wanted them to focus on their work!

But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!”  – Exodus 5:4 NIV

Day 6

Pharaoh told Moses and Aaron no about them leaving. Then he told them that the Israelites needed to continue working! Pharaoh did not want them to stop! Today let’s read Exodus 5:5 and grab some blocks, bricks or something similar and ask your Tiny Arrow to build a tower. As they are building, explain that Pharaoh wanted the Israelites to keep working and not stop!

Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.” – Exodus 5:5 NIV

Day 7

Pharaoh wanted the Israelites to work and to continue working! The Israelites had people who were in charge of them while they were working called overseers and slave drivers, but Pharaoh was the top boss! Today let’s read Exodus 5:6 explain to your Tiny Arrow that if they had a babysitter or someone looking after them, they would be in charge while you are gone, but their parents are the top boss! Just like Pharaoh!

That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people: – Exodus 5:6 NIV

Day 8

Pharaoh was the Israelites top boss and told the people who were in charge of them a new job site rule! He told them to no longer give the Israelites straw to make bricks! They had to go find their own! Today let’s read Exodus 5:7 and grab 5-6 bricks, blocks or something similar to build a tower. Give your Tiny Arrow 2, then take the rest and scatter them in the room. Once they have used the first two blocks tell them to find their remaining blocks to continue to build the tower. Just like the Israelites now had to find their straw to make bricks!

“You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw.” – Exodus 5:7 NIV

Day 9

Pharaoh made the Israelites job harder, but he told them they still had to do the same amount of work! He thought they were being lazy! Today let’s read Exodus 5:8 and have your Tiny Arrow trace the rectangles on the left side of the paper to make bricks. Then have them trace the lines and rectangles on the right side. Explain that before they just had to make the bricks, but now they had to find the straw and make the bricks!

“But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’” – Exodus 5:8 NIV

Day 10

Pharaoh wanted the Israelites to work even harder! He wanted them to work so hard they didn’t listen to Moses and Aaron anymore! Today let’s read Exodus 5:9 and have your Tiny Arrow do 5 slow jumps or jumping jacks. Then have them do 10 quick jumps or jumping jacks. Explain when they are working quicker and harder, they focus more on the work then others things!

“Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.” – Exodus 5:9 NIV

Day 11

Pharaoh gave orders to the people in charge of the Israelites to not give them any more straw. Then the people obeyed and told the Israelites what Pharaoh said! Today let’s read Exodus 5:10 and ask your Tiny Arrow to make/get something. It could be something simple like getting a glass or water or harder like making a sandwich. Do not give them any tools to do it, but explain that they have to get everything themselves. Just like the Israelites were told too!

Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw.’” – Exodus 5:10 NIV

Day 12

The Israelite’s bosses told them to go and get more straw wherever they could find it! They needed the straw to make bricks, but now they would need to find straw and make the same amount of bricks as the day before! Today let’s read Exodus 5:11 and talk about work. Compare this situation to a cook trying to prepare a meal at a restaurant and having to go find the ingredients in a garden, store or wherever they could find them. It would take a lot more time! Even though the work got harder, what they were suppose to do did not change!

“‘Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.’” – Exodus 5:11 NIV

Day 13

The Israelites were tasked to go find straw to make their bricks, and they did! They looked all over Egypt for straw! Today let’s read Exodus 5:12 and have your Tiny Arrow find the hidden straw on the coloring page!

So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. – Exodus 5:12 NIV

Day 14

The Israelites were working hard to find straw and make bricks! Their bosses kept reminding them that they still had to make just as many bricks! Today let’s read Exodus 5:13 and grab some play doh or something similar. Tell your Tiny Arrow to make 5 bricks (or balls, whichever is easier for them). After they complete one, remind them they need to make 4 more. Keep reminding them until all 5 are made, then explain you were reminding them how many they needed to make, just like the slave drivers were reminding the Israelites how many they needed to make!

The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.” – Exodus 5:13 NIV

Day 15

Even though the slave drivers reminded the Israelites how many bricks they needed to make, it was too hard! It was so hard that they could not complete the task! So the Israelites that watched over the brick makers got beat by the slave drivers because it wasn’t done! They were mad there were not as many bricks! Today let’s read Exodus 5:14 and help your Tiny Arrow count the bricks on the coloring page. Count the bricks from before the new rule and afterwards and see if they are the same!

And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?” – Exodus 5:14 NIV

Day 16

The slave drivers had hurt the Israelite overseers because the Israelites were not making enough bricks! But it was hard for them to do so much extra work! So the overseers wanted to ask Pharaoh why they were being treated so badly! Today let’s read Exodus 5:15 and talk your Tiny Arrow about why they asked Pharaoh. They could have asked the slave drivers why they were not being treated well, but instead they wanted to ask their top boss what was going on. They knew that Pharaoh’s command mattered the most!

Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way?” – Exodus 5:15 NIV

Day 17

The Israelite overseers were in front of Pharaoh asking him why they were being treated so badly! They defended their people by saying they had too much work, and blamed the Egyptians for not giving them any straw! Today let’s read Exodus 5:16 and talk to your Tiny Arrows about different peoples jobs in a restaurant. There is a host, waiter, cook, cleaner, etc. the explain if one person was suppose to take 2 or more of those tasks, it would be hard for them! The overseers were complaining to their boss that if everyone did their job, things would go better!

“Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.” – Exodus 5:16 NIV

Day 18

Pharaoh heard the Israelite overseers and he was not kind or helpful to their plea! He told them that they were lazy! Today let’s read Exodus 5:17 and talk to your Tiny Arrow about putting God first. If you start your day reading the Bible or praying before doing chores, does that mean you are being lazy? No! Then explain that Pharaoh was doing the opposite and was putting work before God.

Pharaoh said, “Lazy, that’s what you are—lazy! That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’” – Exodus 5:17 NIV

Day 19

Pharaoh told the Israelites that they were lazy. They had come to talk to him because they had too much work, but Pharaoh said they still had the same amount of work to do! Today let’s read Exodus 5:18 and grab 10 toys or items that stack. Arrange the toys into three piles, the first with 4 items, the second with 2 and the third with 4. Help your Tiny Arrow stack the first group and count it together, explaining that is how many bricks Pharaoh asked them to make. Then help your Tiny Arrow stack the second pile of two bricks and count it together, explaining that is how many bricks they could make. Then help your Tiny Arrow stack the third pile and count it together, explaining that is how many bricks Pharaoh told them they have to make!

“Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.” – Exodus 5:18 NIV

Day 20

The Israelite overseers had appealed to Pharaoh, telling him they were given too much work. But instead of Pharaoh being kind and helpful, he told them that they still had to make the same amount of bricks. They were not allowed to make less. Today let’s read Exodus 5:19 and talk with your Tiny Arrow about being in trouble. No one likes feeling like they are in trouble, and the Israelites didn’t like it either!

The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.”  – Exodus 5:19 NIV

Day 21

The Israelite overseers talked with Pharaoh. After they left, they saw Moses and Aaron waiting for them! Today let’s read Exodus 5:20 and color the coloring page.

When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, – Exodus 5:20 NIV

Day 22

Moses and Aaron were waiting to meet with the Israelite overseers. But they were not happy to see them! The overseers were mad and said that Moses and Aaron were giving the Egyptians reasons to harm them! Today let’s read Exodus 5:21 and what God said in Exodus 3:7-8. Ask your Tiny Arrow if God wants to help or harm them. Help! The plans God has to help the Israelites will bring them out of their slavery!

and they said, “May the Lord look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.” – Exodus 5:21 NIV

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians – Exodus 3:7-8 NIV

Day 23

The Israelites blamed Moses for their hard work. Then Moses asked God why there was trouble! Today let’s read Exodus 5:22 and talk about who Moses complained to. He did not argue with the Israelites, he did not complain to his brother, he brought the mater directly to God. Then talk to your Tiny Arrows about when we have hurts or confusion, we can always pray to God and talk to Him about it!

Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me?” – Exodus 5:22 NIV

Day 24

Moses was praying to God! He was asking him why they weren’t delivered yet! Why they hadn’t been rescued! Today let’s read Exodus 5:23 and talk to your Tiny Arrows. Sometimes when God says something, it doesn’t happen right away. Sometimes it takes time! But Psalm 34:4-5 says that when we seek God, He answers and delivers us!

“Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.” – Exodus 5:23 NIV

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. – Psalm 34:4-5 NIV

Day 25

Today let’s reread Exodus 5 and remember some of the activity’s we did!
