Genesis 47

Day 1

We ended Genesis 46, and now we are starting Genesis 47! In preparation for the lessons to come, let’s read all of Genesis 47 to your Tiny Arrows!

Day 2

Joseph’s family was in Egypt! Joseph had visited them and told them that he would talk to Pharaoh about them! So Joseph did! Joseph told Pharaoh his family was in Goshen! Today let’s read Genesis 47:1 and have your Tiny Arrow tell you about someone, or pretend, who has recently moved or will be moving!

Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen.” – Genesis 47:1 NIV

Day 3

Jospeh chose 5 of his brothers and brought them before Pharaoh! Today let’s read Genesis 47:2 and ask your Tiny Arrow if Joseph chose 5 of his brothers, how many of his brothers did not see Pharaoh? Remember Jacob had 12 sons! 12-5 (brothers who went) -1(Joseph) = ! 6 of his brothers did not see Pharaoh!

He chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh. – Genesis 47:2 NIV

Day 4

Pharaoh asked Joseph’s brothers what their job was and they answered, they were shepherds, just like their dad Jacob! Today let’s read Genesis 47:3 and color the coloring page.

Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?” “Your servants are shepherds,” they replied to Pharaoh, “Just as our fathers were.” – Genesis 47:3 NIV

Day 5

Joseph’s brothers told Pharaoh the reason that the moved! They had moved because the famine was so bad in Canaan. Today let’s read Genesis 47:4 and talk to your Tiny Arrows about moving. Tell them about a time that you or they or someone the know had moved and the reason why!

They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while, because the famine is severe in Canaan and your servants’ flocks have no pasture. So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.” – Genesis 47:4 NIV

Day 6

Pharaoh got to talk to Joseph’s brothers about why they moved and what their job was. So Pharaoh told Joseph that they should live in the land of Goshen and that if any of them are very good shepherds that they could take care of his animals! Today let’s read Genesis 47:5-6 and grab some toy animals. Give them to your Tiny Arrow and tell them that they were chosen by Pharaoh to take care of them! Then ask your Tiny Arrow how they will take care of them!

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock.” – Genesis 47:5-6 NIV

Day 7

Joseph’s brothers got to see Pharaoh, and then Jacob got to see him! When Jacob saw Pharaoh he blessed him! Today let’s read Genesis 47:7 and have the oldest person in your house say a blessing over your Tiny Arrow!

Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed Pharaoh, – Genesis 47:7 NIV

Day 8

Pharaoh got to meet Jacob and the first thing he said was, “How old are you?” Oh my! Today let’s read Genesis 47:8 and have your Tiny Arrow ask the person who blessed them the previous lesson their age!

Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?” – Genesis 47:8 NIV

Day 9

Pharaoh asked Jacob how old he was and Jacob said 130! But he also said it wasn’t as much as his father’s before him! Today let’s read Genesis 47:9, 25:7 and 35:28 and ask your Tiny Arrow who lived the longest? Issac! He lived to be 180!

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty. My years have been few and difficult, and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.” – Genesis 47:9 NIV

Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years. – Genesis 25:7 NIV

Issac lived a hundred and eighty years. – Genesis 35:28 NIV

Day 10

Before Jacob left Pharaoh, he blessed him! Today let’s read Genesis 47:10 and help your Tiny Arrow give someone a blessing!

Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from his presence – Genesis 47:10 NIV

Day 11

Joseph’s family came to live in Egypt! Joseph let them live in the best part of the land! Today let’s read Genesis 47:11 and ask your Tiny Arrow if they could live anywhere, where would it be and what would they want around them!

So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed. – Genesis 47:11 NIV

Day 12

Joseph let his family live in the best part of the land and he gave them food so there was enough for all their family! Today let’s read Genesis 47:12 and ask your Tiny Arrow if each person in their family gets 1 cup of food a day, how many would they get?

Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children. – Genesis 47:12 NIV

Day 13

There was no food in Canaan, and there was no food in Egypt! The countries began to waste away because the famine was so bad! Today let’s read Genesis 47:13 and Genesis 41:48-49 and ask your Tiny Arrow who they think has food? Joseph! Then ask your Tiny Arrow where the extra food is. The extra food was stored in cities! So while everyone was in need of food, Joseph had planned ahead and stored up enough for the famine!

There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine. – Genesis 47:13 NIV

Joseph collected all the food produced in those seven years of abundance in Egypt and stored it in the cities. In each city he put the food grown in the fields surrounding it. Joseph stored up huge quantities of grain, like the sand of the sea; it was so much that he stopped keeping records because it was beyond measure. – Genesis 41:48-49 NIV

Day 14

Joseph had collected food for the famine and now everyone was buying the food since they had none! Joseph put all the money in Pharaoh’s palace! Today let’s read Genesis 47:14 and grab some food and some money (real or fake). “Buy” the food from your Tiny Arrow (or vice versa) and have them put it in your room.

Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying, and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace. – Genesis 47:14 NIV

Day 15

Everyone in Egypt and Canaan used all their money to buy food! They ran out of money, but they still needed food! Today let’s read Genesis 47:15 and grab 3-4 coins and 4-5 pieces of food. Have your Tiny Arrow use one coin to buy one piece of food, and have them repeat buying the food until they are out of money but there is one piece of food left! Then explain there is food left, but they ran out of money to buy it!

When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? Our money is all gone.” – Genesis 47:15 NIV

Day 15

The people ran out of money to buy food! There was still a famine in the land, so Joseph told them he would trade! If the people gave Joseph their livestock, he would give them food! Today let’s read Genesis 47:16 and grab a snack and a toy animal. Have your Tiny Arrow hold onto the toy while you hold onto the snack. Then tell them you will trade the toy for the snack! Then trade!

“Then bring your livestock,” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.” – Genesis 47:16 NIV

Day 16

When the people’s money was all gone, they spent a year paying for their food with their livestock! Today let’s read Genesis 47:17 and a few small snacks and a few toy animals. One by one have your Tiny Arrow trade you their animals for the snacks!

So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock. – Genesis 47:17 NIV

Day 17

For a year the people traded their livestock for food! But after a year they had no more animals to trade! The only thing the people had left to trade was themselves and their land! Today let’s read Genesis 47:18 and have your Tiny Arrow ask you for food. Tell them they have no more money and animals to sell, but they could sell their room and do some chores instead!

When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. – Genesis 47:18 NIV

Day 18

The people told Joseph that they would trade themselves and their land for food. But they also wanted seed to plant on the land so the land could produce food! Today let’s read Genesis 47:19 and grab some cereal! Tell your Tiny Arrow that you will trade with them, and give them seed to grow more food, then have them plant a piece of cereal (in the dirt or elsewhere).

Why should we perish before your eyes—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.” – Genesis 47:19 NIV

Day 19

Joseph bought all the land in Egypt! Now Pharaoh had a lot of land! Today let’s read Genesis 47:20-21 and color in all Pharaoh’s land! Save this for the next lesson!

So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, and Joseph reduced the people to servitude, from one end of Egypt to the other. – Genesis 47:20-21 NIV

Day 20

Everyone in Egypt sold their land to Joseph but the priests! The priests got food and land from Pharaoh already! Today let’s read Genesis 47:22 and color in the priests land yellow!

However, he did not buy the land of the priests, because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land. – Genesis 47:22 NIV

Day 21

After Joseph had bought the land from the Egyptians, he gave them seed to plant more food on the land! Today let’s read Genesis 47:23 and plant some seeds outside (you can use real or pretend seeds)!

Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you can plant the ground. – Genesis 47:23 NIV

Day 22

Joseph told the people, that what food they grew, they had to give 1/5 of it to Pharaoh! The rest they get to keep for themselves! Today let’s read Genesis 47:24 and grab 5 small snacks. Count them with your Tiny Arrow and explain that one goes to you and the rest are for them! You get 1/5 and they get 4/5!

But when the crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.” – Genesis 47:24 NIV

Day 23

The people weren’t sad that they lost their land and now served Pharaoh! They were happy! Today let’s read Genesis 47:25 and ask your Tiny Arrow if they needed to trade something in order to have food, what would they trade. Then ask them if it would make them happy or sad. Even though the Egyptians gave up everything, they were happy because they got to have food and live!

“You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord; we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.” – Genesis 47:25 NIV

Day 24

Joseph made it a law in Egypt that a fifth of the food that grows belongs to Pharaoh! Like a tax! Today let’s read Genesis 47:26 and grab 15 small snacks. Help your Tiny Arrow group them in 3 piles of 5. Explain that the different groups represent different years, then have them give you one from each pile.

So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s. – Genesis 47:26 NIV

Day 25

While Joseph’s family was in Egypt it got bigger and bigger! They didn’t have a little more family, they had a lot! Today let’s read Genesis 47:27 and grab a handful of small cereal or a dozen small objects. Then help your Tiny Arrow spread them out so each object has room around it. Then have your Tiny Arrow compare how much room one object needs to all of them! More family means more space!

Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number. – Genesis 47:27 NIV

Day 26

After Jacob moved to Egypt he lived 17 more years! He lived a total of 147 years! Today let’s read Genesis 47:28, 25:7 and 35:28 and see who lived the longest! Issac! Jacob’s father!

Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven. – Genesis 47:28 NIV

Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years. – Genesis 25:7 NIV

Issac lived a hundred and eighty years. – Genesis 35:28 NIV

Day 27

Before Jacob died he asked Joseph to promise him that he would bury him in Hebron! He wanted to be buried with Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah and Leah! He wanted to be buried with his family! Today let’s read Genesis 47:29-30 and Genesis 23:19-20 to find out who was buried there first and who bought the burial sight. Sarah was buried their first and Abraham bought the site!

When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt, but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.” “ I will do as you say,” he said. – Genesis 47:29-30 NIV

Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan. So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site. – Genesis 23:19-20 NIV

Day 28

Joseph swore to his father that he would bury him in Hebron! This caused Jacob to worship as he leaned on his staff! Today let’s read Genesis 47:31 and grab a staff, stick, broom or something similar and have your Tiny Arrow sing a worship song as they lean on it!

“Swear to me,” he said. Then Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff. – Genesis 47:31 NIV

Day 29

Today let’s reread Genesis 47 and remember the activities and verses we learned!
